Fort Point, San Francisco, California

Hello All, I'm back after a few months of continuous work, both personal and official.

Missed writing my articles , hope to continue my blog regularly from now on !!!

We recently again been to few places for a vacation in the beautiful Golden state of California 🌁 with plenty of sunshine 🌞, easy access to the beaches πŸ₯½ and delicious food πŸ˜‹..

One of our visit was to the Fort Point, a National Historic Site (NHS), located on the south side of the Golden Gate bridge which was once a strategic importance place in securing San Francisco from any attack by foreign countries. Fort Point became a US historic site in 1970.

It's a well-preserved old fort and, surprisingly, not crowded.

An interesting experience just right under the Golden Gate Bridge. The admission to the fort is free to visit with either a self-guided or docent to lead the tour.

Small history -

Fort Point underwent many uses over the years since its construction -

Spain occupied San Francisco in 1769, and to protect against rival countries, built this fort. However, it was abandoned when Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821 after the Mexican-Spanish war. But again, during the Gold Rush period and concern about invasion from foreign countries, a new fortress was constructed at Fort Point from 1853 to 1861. During the Civil war, many soldiers were stationed at Fort Point to protect San Francisco. During World War II, soldiers were stationed at Fort Point to guard against rival countries from attacking.

We spent about an hour or so wandering around all the different rooms inside (like Officer's quarters, enlisted Men's quarters, gunpowder room etc) which was like a museum with lots of historical displays and plaques to read about what life was like for the soldiers living in the fort. Fort Point includes 4 floors with long passages connected to a lot of rooms, large courtyard in the main floor, winding stairs and top-roof with an incredible view of the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge which gets very windy so definitely bring your jacket. There are old cannons on the ground floor.

This fort tells us the story of its outstanding military architecture and the years spent by the soldiers guarding the San Francisco bay.

Joseph Baermann Strauss, a chief engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge redesigned the plan for the bridge to protect and preserve the Fort Point and said that "the old fort has no military value now but was a fine example of the mason's art should be preserved and restored as a national monument".

And I totally agree since OLD is always a GOLD πŸ’°

Stay Safe friends and have fun exploring my blog and if possible do visit these places whenever your free…

Until my next article ….πŸ‘‹πŸ‘‹
