Diablo Lake Overlook, Rockport, Washington, USA
We recently travelled to North Cascades National Park ( https://sk-digilance.blogspot.com/2021/08/north-cascades-national-park-newhalem.html) since it was a sunny day, I meet few very friendly Rangers @ North Cascades National Park visitor center, when asked about nearby vista points along North Cascades Highway 20, one of the Ranger recommended us few stops @ Diablo Lake Overlook, Washington Pass, Gorge Creek Overlook.
So after spending some time @ North Cascades National Park, we went to Gorge Creek Overlook and then to Diablo Lake Overlook.
Diablo Lake Overlook is so far my favorite and is probably one of the more popular vista point along Highway 20. Its 2.5 hrs. drive from Seattle and almost 20-30 mins drive from North Cascades National Park. We parked in the large parking area on the north side of highway. There were 3-4 information plaques about the area attracting the visitors. I enjoyed walking around and the overlook of the lake was the most bewitching scenic view and the turquoise color of a lake I've ever seen especially surrounded by majestic mountains is spectacular which took my breath away. It felt so untouched and unblemished! Totally picturesque !!π
I took my time to enjoy the peaceful view before me since it was less crowded and with the weather being so windy because of the high altitude, the view was spectacular that can’t be seen anywhere else.
Diablo Lake is a reservoir and a recreational spot for kayakers and canoeists in the North Cascade mountains in Washington state, it is located between Ross Lake and Gorge Lake on the Skagit River. This lake is part of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project which controls Diablo Dam, one of three dams along the upper Skagit River of Whatcom County in Washington.
The Diablo Dam, named from a Chinook tribe, the word "Diablo" by Spanish explorers translated as "devil". Chinook is an American Indian tribe of the Northwest Coast lived in Washington and Oregon states along the Columbia River.
Ps:
This place is very easily accessible.
There is no hiking to this area.
There are plenty of parking spots available.
I'm not sure about restroom thou.
Highly recommended stop along the North Cascades Highway 20. Take your time when you visit Diablo Lake and Enjoy the turquoise color lake surrounded by mountain peaks, view of Diablo Dam (389 feet) in the distance and adjoining creeks.
Of course, There would be a question asked as to "Why is Diablo Lake turquoise in color ?".
The color of the lake "turquoise" is attributed to the surrounding glaciers that grind rocks into a fine powder know as "Glacial rock flour" that is carried into the lake through creeks and when the sun rays hits the fine powder in the lake, that reflects off into greenish-bluish color to the naked eye.
Well worth the drive and a perfect weekend get-away place in my opinion.
Stay Safe friends and Have fun exploring my Blog and if possible do visit these places whenever ur free…
